The Panel on contaminants in the food chain (CONTAM) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published an Opinion on non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs) in food and feed. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a mixture of individual chemicals, which, based on their biochemical and toxicological properties, can be divided into two different groups: the dioxin-like PCBs

Ballasts manufactured in the USA after 1979 will have ‘PCB-free’ labels attached. No such equivalent requirement in the EU is known to exist. All lighting ballasts manufactured before 1989 that do not contain a ‘PCB-free’ label should be considered How Europe and the US Take Different Stances on PCB Material Regulation May 14, 2020 by Vanessa Samuel The United States and the European Union have always differed when it comes to the regulation of materials and products distributed through their countries.

Council Directive 96/59/EC of 16 September 1996 on the disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated terphenyls (PCB/PCT). PCB- Regulation EU 1259/2011 and Regulation EU 277/2012 recently updated them and set maximum levels for non dioxin-like PCBs in food and feed respectively.

Regulation EU 1259/2011 and Regulation EU 277/2012 recently updated them and set maximum levels for non dioxin-like PCBs in food and feed respectively. These regulations took account of more recent data on dioxins and PCBs in food and feed published in two EFSA scientific monitoring reports, and an EFSA scientific opinion on non dioxin-like PCBs. The POPs Regulation bans or severely restricts the production and use of persistent organic pollutants in the European Union. Therefore the measures were reviewed and Commission Regulation (EU) No 258/2010 replacing Decision 2008/433/EC was adopted and is applicable as from 15 April 2010. Dioxins in pork meat in Ireland During routine monitoring by the Irish authorities of the food chain for a range of contaminants, elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were found in pig meat originating in Ireland. EPA is interpreting its PCB regulations under the TSCA to generally allow for recycling of plastic separated from automobile and other shredder residue.

Dioxins are unwanted by-products generated by thermal and industrial processes. PCBs had numerous industrial applications before being banned in the EU by the 1980s. Twelve PCBs are referred to as “dioxin-like PCBs” as they share toxicological properties with dioxins. For more information see our Topic on Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.
